Today was the big day,. I thought I would document each day of the recovery as I have read so many other people's experiences and am interested to see how my recovery plays out.
Right now I have to say I was Super surprised as to how well I am feeling. I say that with the knowledge that the worst days are supposed to be days 5-8 when the scabs in the back of the throat form. So I was very nervous today, went in to the outpatient clinic at 6:00 a.m and was out by 9:00. Eric said the actual surgery was 15 minutes. The only thing the Dr. said to him regarding it was that the tonsils looked really cheesy after they came out, which means they had a lot of those little white stones in them. Nasty I know. That was one of the reasons I got them removed. I always had those little things back there. That and the fact that my tonsils almost touched even when there weren't inflamed. But back to today. This place was seriously like a "line up to be cut up" place. So many people lined up only divided by a thin curtain. I wore a gown, socks, and a shower cap thingy to keep my hair out of my face. This is gonna sound stupid but I was more nervous about getting the IV than having the surgery. But I didn't pass out! yay! and I was pretty proud of myself for handling it so well. The anesthesiologist gave me something to calm my nerves, then pain meds for when I woke up, then they rolled me into the operating room. I remember feeling really cozy and warm and then I was out. When I woke up I didn't remember where I was but after I did Eric said I kept asking the nurse if the Dr. took my adenoids out. They didn't. They gave me a few minutes to get dressed, checked my vitals, took out my IV and then a nurse came in to clean the room. Crazy fast. But it was a pleasant experience, if that can be said about a surgery.
Now I am home with a sore throat. My main concerns are keeping my throat wet, so it doesn't crack and bleed. Keeping some food in my stomach so I don't get nauseated from the pain meds and throw up. And keeping on schedule with my pain meds. I tried to sleep already but wasn't really able to. I'm going to give it another try now. So far so good and like I said, I'm pretty happy. Also because my parent's in law are here helping out with the kids which makes life so much easier! My hubby also has been with me every step of the way and is taking excellent care of me. I'm so grateful for all your prayers and support and for My Heavenly Father watching over me today. I'll post each day on how the rest of recovery goes.
Good luck with the recovery! Yes, keep that throat wet and keep on top of those pain meds!!! Wish I was there to drop off a box of popsicles!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got that done and that you're feeling pretty good- I think it will make you feel a lot better:)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the actually surgery was a breeze. I hear you on the IV thing--I have to use deep breathing to make it through having my blood drawn. And I'm plagued to death with those nasty tonsil stones too. I've actually thought about a tonsillectomy to take care of it, but that's really the only problem they give me, and I found a product line (Therabreath) that helps a lot. Anyway, I hope your recovery continues to go smoothly!
ReplyDeleteYuck..my tonsils were the same way. I had Dr.s prescribe me steroids to shrink them when they weren't even inflamed. I can never sleep well the first 24 hours after surgery...kind of a weird reaction, but sleep as much as you can & hydrate & eat. I didn't & trust me you don't want to deal with an upset stomach while your throat is so tender. I don't know if the throat scabs are really a problem. I don't remember them hurting...but they did gross me out so much I stopped eating for about a week. The thought of possibly swallowing them was just too much to handle. Ewwww...I know I'm pathetic. Please be tougher than I was!
ReplyDeleteMake sure you breath in Eric's face a lot this week. Olivia's breath was so bad after her tonsils were taken out I honestly gagged.
