Scripture Power

This year Eric and I decided to make a better effort to read scriptures together as a family. We've heard so many times that even though the kids may not understand all of the words they will feel the spirit and become familiar with them. My sister and brother in law reinforced this goal when they sent Bianca her own little Book of Mormon with her name engraved on it for Christmas. We thought if anything would motivate her it would be that, we were a bit hesitant.

So we decided to sit down every night after dinner and read a bit. The first time we read together we thought we would only get through a couple of verses. We took turns reading and my 4 yr old can't read yet so we would tell her word or a couple of words for word what to say. She sounds so cute saying things like "it came to pass". Anyway she LOVED it. We got through 2 chapters the first night and she has been the one to remind us every day after dinner that we need to read. Wyatt at first didn't show any interest but we got him his own book and now he will say a verse or two also. It's awesome. And it's another testimony to me of Alma's words in the Book of Mormon when he said, "
And now, as the apreaching of the bword had a great tendency to clead the people to do that which was just—yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else....

Eric and I have been really surprised as to how well it's been going and maybe we need to repent because of our hesitancy. Of course Eric and I have felt the change that comes inside from reading for ourselves but didn't think it would affect our children yet, we thought they were too young. But we've seen the difference it's made in our family in such a short time and now can say with surety that we believe in scripture power! Woot Woot!

  1. Wow, I'm impressed. You've inspired me to try it...I always figure Kaleb is too young too.

  2. We were asked to speak on scripture reading with small children last August and SERIOUSLY felt called to repentance. We've been reading ever since and what you said is true, there is a noticeable difference in our family and our kids have responded mostly positively.

  5. That's wonderful! We've mostly been doing stories from the Friend, since they would get so restless when we read from the scriptures, but I think you're on to something, letting them have their very own copy of the scriptures. And now that Ben can read well, we really should be doing more. Thanks for the inspiration. :)
