Wyatt's 2 year check up

Wyatt's birthday was a few months ago but he just had his check up a couple days ago. I thought it would just be a quick discussion with the Dr. and we'd be in and out. The Dr. did express some concern though about his weight. He is under the 3rd percentile for his age. I am used to my skinny little kids and their poor eating habits but I wasn't worried about it. I mean Wyatt is healthy, energetic. Bianca was the same way, underweight but at least she was in the 5th percentile.

Wyatt is doing well on all other accounts. His speech is good, he can say sentences. He hears well, he's concerned for others, he can stack blocks, he knows the parts of his body. We're still working on colors. For some reason the only ones he can remember are green and yellow. All the rest when I ask him what color something is he says, "Ummmmmmm" forever until I tell him.

But back to the visit,... the Dr. said she wanted to see him back in 6 months if he still weighed under 24 pounds. She talked about thyroid problems and digestive problems, got me all concerned. She said to give him 1 tablespoon of olive oil a day, in his food or drink. We were told to do this with Bianca too at this age. She still took a bottle and it seemed fairly easy except for the fact that oil floats on liquids and she could taste it at as she neared the bottom of the bottle and she would just leave it. With Wyatt I've been putting it in his macaroni and cheese or juice but he noticed right away and wouldn't touch it after, he knew something wasn't right with it. So I'll continue to try. His height is good, in the 50th percentile. So hopefully he's just skinny and doesn't have any of the above problems I've mentioned.

I tried to be proactive and got his high chair out to keep him sitting while eating but he won't even touch his food when he's in it. He's like Bianca in that he is too busy to eat and eats a lot right before bed when he's calmed down. I think after I took the bottle away he dropped a LOT of pounds. That milk seemed to keep him at a healthy weight but he doesn't drink it anymore, not even chocolate milk.

I have a few friends who have chunky babies and I tell them all the time that I wish my kids would get some chunk on them. They think I'm joking but now you know I'm not! My poor little skinnies. I'll just have to make sure I put heavy shoes on them in the fall when the wind kicks up so they don't blow away!

  1. Aw, poor skinny kids. I'm sure they're fine, just bake alot of cookies & cakes & their weight will go up :):) Good luck with the olive oil trick...I don't think I'd be into eating/drinking it either!!!
